on your Mac.

And 7z, TAR, ISO and more. Save what’s inside, or turn the whole archive into a ZIP your Mac opens with a double-click. It all happens in your browser.

Why your Mac can’t open RAR files.

Archive Utility, built into macOS, handles ZIP and a few Unix formats. RAR comes from WinRAR and 7z from 7-Zip, two Windows favourites, so a double-click on them goes nowhere.

How to open a RAR file on Mac.

Three steps, about a minute, and nothing left behind on your Mac.

1

Drop the archive

Drag the RAR or 7z file onto the window above, or click it to choose the file.

2

See what’s inside

Every file appears with its folder and size. A password-protected ZIP asks for its password.

3

Save what you need

Download one file, or everything as a single ZIP that macOS opens with a double-click.

Convert RAR to ZIP, in one click.

Need to send the files on, or keep them in a format every computer opens? Download all as ZIP rebuilds the archive as a ZIP with the same files and folders.

ZIP opens natively on macOS, Windows, iPhone and iPad, so whoever gets it won’t need an app either.

Every archive you’re likely to get.

OpenRAR is built on libarchive, the archive engine used across macOS, FreeBSD and many Linux systems.

RAR

RAR4 and RAR5, including solid archives.

.rar

7-Zip

The 7-Zip format, common for large downloads on Windows.

.7z

ZIP

Including password-protected ZIPs, with folders kept.

.zip

TAR

Plain or compressed, as made on Linux and macOS.

.tar.tar.gz.tgz.tar.bz2.tar.xz

Gzip

A single compressed file.

.gz

Disk images

ISO images: see and save the files inside.

.iso

CPIO

Unix archives, often found in packages.

.cpio

Not supported

Archives split into parts must be joined first. OpenRAR doesn’t create RAR files.

.part2.rar.r00

Your files never leave your device.

Most online converters upload your archive to their servers. OpenRAR doesn’t: the extraction runs in this page, on your Mac, iPhone or PC.

No upload

The archive is read in your browser’s memory and gone when you close the tab. There is nothing to delete from a server.

Works offline

Once the page has loaded, you can turn Wi-Fi off and keep opening archives. That’s the proof nothing is sent.

iPhone and iPad too

In Safari, open a RAR from the Files app and save its contents back to Files. No App Store download needed.

OpenRAR for Mac is on the way.

A native app is in the works at Yando, to open RAR and 7z files straight from Finder. Want to know when it’s ready?

Questions.

How do I open a RAR file on a Mac?

Drop the RAR file on openrar.app. Your browser opens it and lists everything inside; save the files you need, or download them all as one ZIP that macOS opens with a double-click. Nothing to install.

Why can’t my Mac open RAR files?

Archive Utility, built into macOS, opens ZIP files and a few Unix formats, but not RAR or 7z. RAR is the format of WinRAR, common on Windows and for downloads; 7z is the format of 7-Zip.

How do I convert a RAR or 7z file to ZIP?

Open the archive with OpenRAR, then choose Download all as ZIP. You get one ZIP with the same files and folders, which every Mac, PC, iPhone and iPad can open.

Are my files uploaded?

No. OpenRAR opens the archive with code that runs in your browser tab, so it never leaves your device. Once the page has loaded, it even works offline.

Can OpenRAR open password-protected archives?

Password-protected ZIP files, yes: OpenRAR asks for the password and opens them in your browser, without sending it anywhere. Password-protected RAR and 7z archives can’t be opened yet.

Does it work on iPhone and iPad?

Yes, in Safari. Open the archive from the Files app, then save the files or the ZIP back to Files.

What are the limits?

Everything happens in your browser’s memory, so archives of several gigabytes can be too big, especially on phones. Archives split into parts (.part1.rar, .part2.rar…) need to be joined first. OpenRAR opens archives; it doesn’t create RAR files.

Can I open RAR files without a browser?

Yes, from Terminal: install Homebrew, then run brew install unar and unar file.rar. A native OpenRAR app for Mac is also on the way.
