OpenRAR for Mac: End-User Licence Agreement
Effective date: 2 November 2026
This agreement is between you and Yando Pte. Ltd., a company incorporated in Singapore (UEN 202018750D), 68 Circular Road, #02-01, Singapore 049422 (“Yando”, “we”, “us”). It covers the OpenRAR app for Mac and every update or new version of it that we release (“OpenRAR”). It does not cover the free web tool on openrar.app.
By installing or using OpenRAR, you accept this agreement. If you use OpenRAR for an organisation, you accept it for that organisation and confirm that you are allowed to do so; “you” then means the organisation. If you do not accept it, do not install or use OpenRAR.
In short: OpenRAR is free for personal use. If you use it for work, your organisation needs a Business licence, with one seat for each person who uses it. Each seat covers up to 3 Macs, you pay once, and every future version of OpenRAR for Mac is included. Without a licence, OpenRAR shows a reminder at launch and keeps working.
1. OpenRAR is licensed, not sold
OpenRAR and its code, design and documentation belong to Yando or its licensors. We give you the rights described in this agreement. We keep every right that this agreement does not give you. The third-party components described in section 8 are under their own licences.
2. Definitions
- Personal use means private use by an individual that is not commercial use. Examples: opening your own downloads, photos or game files, hobby projects, and your own studies as a student.
- Commercial use means any use of OpenRAR:
- by or for a company, sole trader, freelancer, partnership, non-profit organisation, school, public body or other organisation; or
- as part of a job, paid work or a business, including on a personal Mac you also use for work; or
- to provide services to others for payment.
- Mac means one computer running macOS. Each virtual machine counts as a separate Mac.
- Seat means one unit of a Business licence. A seat is for one person, who may use OpenRAR commercially on up to 3 Macs.
- Business licence means the licence you buy under our Terms of Sale. It has a number of seats and comes with one licence key per order.
- Licensee means the person or organisation the Business licence is issued to. This is the company name given at checkout. If none was given, it is the buyer’s name, and failing that the buyer’s email address. It appears in the app as “Licensed to …”.
3. Free personal use
You may install and use OpenRAR for personal use on any number of Macs you own or control, free of charge and without a licence key. Every feature is available.
4. Business licence for commercial use
4.1 What you need. Commercial use requires a Business licence with one seat for each person who uses OpenRAR commercially. Each seat covers that person’s use on up to 3 Macs. Non-profit organisations, schools and public bodies need a licence like any other organisation. We may grant free licences case by case: write to support@openrar.app.
4.2 What you get. When you buy a Business licence and pay for it, we grant the Licensee a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual licence. It allows commercial use of OpenRAR by as many people as the licence has seats, each on up to 3 Macs. Those people may be the Licensee itself and its employees and contractors working for it. There is no subscription and no expiry date.
4.3 Future versions included. The Business licence covers every future version of OpenRAR for Mac that we release, including major versions, at no extra charge. It does not cover other products, such as an app for another platform. We are not obliged to release updates or new versions, or to support future versions of macOS.
4.4 Evaluation. An organisation may evaluate OpenRAR for commercial use for 30 days without a licence. After those 30 days, continued commercial use requires a Business licence.
4.5 Activation. To record a licence on a Mac, enter the licence key in OpenRAR (Enter Licence Key…). This requires an internet connection once. A licence key can be activated on up to 3 Macs per seat at the same time. When it is online, the app then checks the licence with our server about every 30 days. It does so only to learn whether the licence has been refunded, suspended or revoked. Offline, the licence stays on the Mac.
4.6 Moving the licence to another Mac. To free a Mac’s place, choose “Deactivate on This Mac” in the Licence window. If a Mac is lost, stolen or broken, write to us and we will free its place.
4.7 Your proof of licence. Your right to commercial use comes from this agreement and your purchase, not from the activation. Keep your purchase email or invoice as proof. If we ever stop running the licence server, your Business licence stays valid. Macs that are already activated stay activated, because the app checks the licence on the Mac itself.
4.8 Lost key. If you lose your key, write to support@openrar.app from the email address used at checkout. We send a new key, and the previous key can no longer activate new Macs. Macs that are already activated are not affected.
5. The reminder
On a Mac without an active Business licence, OpenRAR shows a reminder each time it starts. You close it with one click, and no feature is limited. The reminder does not decide what you may do: this agreement does. Commercial use without a Business licence, beyond the evaluation in section 4.4, breaches this agreement, even though the app keeps working.
6. What you may not do
You may not:
- share, publish, sell or give a licence key to anyone outside the Licensee and its employees and contractors;
- use OpenRAR commercially by more people, or on more Macs, than your seats allow;
- sell, rent, lend or sublicense OpenRAR, or a Business licence except as the Terms of Sale allow (transfer of the whole licence);
- distribute copies of OpenRAR outside your organisation. Point people to openrar.app instead. Installing OpenRAR across your own organisation, for example with device-management tools, is allowed;
- work around the licence checks, or change OpenRAR’s code to remove or alter them;
- remove or change copyright, licence or trademark notices in OpenRAR;
- decompile or reverse engineer OpenRAR’s own code, except to the extent the law allows it despite this restriction, or as section 8 allows for third-party components;
- use OpenRAR in breach of the law, including to open archives you have no right to access.
7. Your files
OpenRAR opens, lists, tests and extracts archives on your Mac. It does not upload them (see the Privacy Policy). Archives often come from unknown sources, and some are damaged or deliberately malformed. OpenRAR reads them in a separate process to protect the app. It cannot guarantee that every archive can be opened or fully recovered, and it does not scan extracted files for malware. For archives downloaded from the internet, OpenRAR passes the macOS quarantine mark on to the extracted files, so macOS can still check them. You are responsible for the archives you open, for having the right to use their contents, and for keeping backups.
8. Third-party components
OpenRAR includes these components, unmodified. Their licence texts ship inside the app (About OpenRAR › Acknowledgements):
- UnRAR 7.3.2 (RARLAB, Alexander Roshal), for reading RAR archives: UnRAR freeware licence.
- 7-Zip 26.05 (Igor Pavlov), as the separate program 7zz, for reading 7z and some ZIP archives: GNU LGPL 2.1, with the “unRAR licence restriction”.
- libarchive 3.8.10, for ZIP, TAR, ISO, CPIO and other formats: BSD licence.
- XZ Utils 5.8.4 (liblzma), for xz decompression: BSD Zero Clause (0BSD).
- Zstandard 1.5.7, for zstd decompression: BSD licence.
- LZ4 1.10.0, for lz4 decompression: BSD licence.
- Their licences prevail. Each component is governed by its own licence. Nothing in this agreement limits the rights those licences give you, and where they conflict with this agreement, they prevail for that component. Our price pays for OpenRAR’s own code and for the Business licence. It does not pay for these components.
- 7-Zip (LGPL). You may use, study, modify and replace the 7zz program inside OpenRAR under the terms of the GNU LGPL 2.1. The source code of the version included in OpenRAR is available at openrar.app/source, or on request at support@openrar.app. 7-Zip’s source code is also published at 7-zip.org.
- UnRAR. OpenRAR uses UnRAR only to read and extract RAR archives. It does not create RAR archives, and never will. UnRAR’s licence forbids using its code to develop a RAR-compatible archiver or to re-create the RAR compression algorithm. You may not use the UnRAR code contained in OpenRAR for either purpose.
- Trademarks. RAR and WinRAR are trademarks of their owners. OpenRAR is not affiliated with or endorsed by RARLAB or win.rar GmbH. 7-Zip is a work of Igor Pavlov. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc.
9. Privacy
How OpenRAR and our licence server handle personal data is explained in the Privacy Policy. In short: your archives never leave your Mac. The app connects to our server only to activate, check and deactivate a Business licence.
10. No warranty
To the extent the law allows, OpenRAR is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. This includes fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement. We do not promise that OpenRAR is free of errors or will open every archive. The third-party components are also provided without warranty by their authors.
If you are a consumer, this section does not affect the guarantees the law gives you, for example that paid digital content must conform to its description.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profits, business interruption, or loss or corruption of data;
- if you hold a Business licence, our total liability for all claims relating to OpenRAR is limited to the amount paid for that licence;
- if you use OpenRAR free of charge, our total liability for all claims relating to OpenRAR is limited to €50.
These limits do not apply where the law does not allow them. This includes death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, and consumers’ mandatory rights.
12. Termination and suspension
- By you. You can stop using OpenRAR at any time and delete it.
- Refund. If a Business licence is refunded in full, the licence ends on the date of the refund. Its key can no longer be activated, and activated Macs remove the licence the next time they check with our server. A partial refund for unused seats (see the Refund Policy) lowers the number of seats and does not end the licence.
- Payment dispute. If you dispute a payment with your bank or card issuer, we suspend the licence until the dispute is resolved. While it is suspended, its key cannot be activated, and activated Macs remove the licence the next time they check with our server. If the dispute is resolved in our favour, we restore the licence. If the payment is returned to you, the licence ends, as with a full refund. If you think a charge is wrong, please write to us first; we will sort it out.
- Breach. If you seriously breach this agreement (for example by sharing a key publicly), and do not fix the breach within 14 days of our notice, we may end the Business licence and revoke its key. We may revoke a key at once if it was obtained by fraud or published.
- What happens next. When a Business licence ends, OpenRAR keeps working with the reminder, and personal use stays free. Commercial use must stop, or you buy a new licence.
Sections 1, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14 and 15 continue to apply after termination.
13. Changes to this agreement
We may update this agreement for new versions of OpenRAR. The date at the top shows the version in force. A change never reduces what a Business licence already bought includes: its seats, 3 Macs per seat, perpetual use, and future versions of OpenRAR for Mac.
14. Governing law and disputes
This agreement, and any dispute about it or about OpenRAR, is governed by the laws of Singapore, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. The courts of Singapore have exclusive jurisdiction. Before starting any proceedings, please write to us: most issues are settled faster that way.
If you are a consumer in the EU, the EEA or the United Kingdom, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer rules of the country where you live, including any rule that is more favourable to you than this agreement. You may also bring proceedings in the courts of that country.
15. General
- Entire agreement. This agreement, the Terms of Sale and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement about OpenRAR.
- Severability. If a clause is held invalid, the rest stays in force.
- No waiver. Not enforcing a clause once does not waive it.
- Assignment. We may transfer this agreement as part of a reorganisation or sale of our business, without reducing your rights. You may transfer a Business licence only as the Terms of Sale allow.
- Language. The English version is the binding one.
